Patachitra or Pattachitra is a handmade cloth based scroll painting originating in the eastern Indian states of Odisha & West Bengal , as well as parts of Bangladesh.
This art form is renowned in its intricate , colourful details and depiction of mythological narratives and folk tales. Patachitra was originally artworks created by Odiya craftsmen as souvenirs for pilgrims visiting temples of the region.
Additionally Patachitras are an element of ancient Bengali narrative art that served as visual aids during song performances .
The paintings are made on various materials that include canvas , silk and wood . They can be made in large sizes and on walls using natural and artificial colours .The concept , stories , technique and the colour combination are passed to the artists from generation to generation by word of mouth.
